Dream Theater - ‘The Count of Tuscany’
This song is about an unexpected and strange encounter John Petrucci, the guitarist, had in Tuscany. The progression of the song is pretty clear. The opening reflects the enthusiasm for adventure. The middle part turns darker, heavier and more foreboding as the protagonist of the song becomes fearful for what he’s got himself into on this adventure deep into the heart of Tuscany’s countryside with an eccentric man. After a slow, spacey, existential limbo, the song twists back to the mood and themes from the beginning as the Count explains things and implores the protagonist to carry his story back to the world. Petrucci launches into an amazingly bright guitar solo whose feeling cannot be ignored, followed by some resounding “whoa-ohs”, Mike Portnoy going crazy on drums, and a brief recapitulation of the melody from the beginning.
